NOTE 03 / SHORT READ

Put the legend beside the map

Geometric illustration

A symbol is only useful when its meaning can be found. Keep a small, consistent legend close to the drawing, and distinguish routes from boundaries.

Use labels where they remove ambiguity. A map should save its reader from remembering a private set of conventions.
